Crochet Design Along – Revisiting an Old Pattern

The Square Motif Belt with Pineapple Fringes is a pattern that I designed nearly two years ago. The pattern calls for cotton thread size 8. I am looking back on that old pattern now and have decided to re-write, re-design and use that opportunity for a Crochet and Design Along for anyone who is interested.

This wide hip belt is worked with join-as-you-go motifs . Edging and the fringed pineapple tips are worked separately

If you would like to join this Crochet Design Along, I would encourage you to use the pattern instructions provided here as guides for developing your own design if possible. So you don’t have to stick to the pattern instructions if you don’t wish to.

Likewise, along the way, I may be modifying the pattern and will write out the new pattern design at the end of this Crochet Design Along. The final pattern will be a free pattern.

YARN: Instead of cotton thread, I am now trying this pattern with worsted weight yarn in olive colour. (I am using Patons Classic Wool)
HOOK: 3.5mm aluminium crochet hook
DESIGN NOTES: The original pattern is designed as a hip belt with ties. I would like to re-design this belt this time as a waist belt, perhaps resembling a “corset-belt.” This means making a length that is shorter than my waistline by about 1-2 inches.

The pineapple edging and fringes are still tentative. These widen the belt but do not provide support. I am thinking of radically redesigning this section of the belt, as well as the design of the ties.

Looking for the crochet choli style

With the basic (sewing) patterns at hand and some photo references of the choli, I started looking for crochet examples of the choli or its style.

I consulted my Duplet magazines and found a few that feature the scoop neck, short sleeves and close fit that define the choli.

Taking photographs to show on the blog wasn’t easy with my cat C.D. always wanting to be included in the photos. But with persistence, here I managed to take a photo shots.

This one is from Duplet 127, a dress with an upper section that resembles the choli style. The top section consists of flower and leaf motifs joined together with crochet mesh.

This one is from Duplet 112, also a dress, with the upper section again looking quite a lovely crocheted choli. These dresses could be crocheted in the short cropped style to make a choli.

And here is the third “choli-style” that I found, this one comes from Duplet 66. This is a top with short sleeves and in the short cropped style.

I have a Duplet Hairpin Lace Special Edition which also have designs that resemble the choli style. Here are a few snapshots.

The front of these crocheted tops could may well be the back of a choli, as shown in the photos in my previous blogpost.

The tie at the neck is really quite a lovely feature. I haven’t yet returned to working in Hairpin Lace but plan to do so in the near future.

There are also some knitting patterns freely available that resemble the choli style. Check out Bolero in lace pattern with short raglan sleeve and Short jacket with crochet cuffs.
