The Drawstring Hat is a crocheted rectangle made in rows starting at the brim. A lacy frill is made when you reach the top then a single-crochet seam is made down along the side of the hat. At the bottom is a small lacy trim is made by crocheting behind the second row. Drawstrings close the top of the hat and another drawstring at the bottom keeps it in place.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Finished Measurements: Head circumference = 19 inches. Hat fits most sizes (adjustable). If a larger hat size is desired, make a foundation chain in multiples of 8; to increase the height of the hat just add more rows.

Yarn: Crochet cotton thread size 8, color beige.
For drawstring: worsted weight yarn in natural color

Hooks: Steel crochet hook size Japan 3 or US Steel 10 (1.3mm)
For drawstring: Aluminum crochet hook size Japan 4/0 or US 0 Steel (2.5mm)

Gauge: 34 sts and 15 rows = 4” (10cm) in double crochet with 1.3mm hook

Terminology: Pattern is written using US crochet terminology (see chart on last page for conversion).

Instructions:Special Stitches:
2-Treble Bobble: (2-tr bobble): In same base st, [yo twice and draw up a loop 2 times, yo and draw through all loops on hook.
4-Treble Bobble: (4-tr bobble): In same base st, [yo twice and draw up a loop 4 times, yo and draw through all loops on hook.
Picot: Ch 3, sl st in base of ch-3.

Instructions:

Ch 144.
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in 2^nd ch fr hook and in each ch across (144 sc). Ch 3 (count as 1 dc), turn.
Row 2: (RS) *Sk 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc, sk 2 sc, dc in each of next 3 sc, rep fr * across ending with dc in each of last 2 sc. Ch 3, turn.
Row 3: Dc in next dc, *sk 2 dc, 5 dc in next dc, sk 2 dc, dc in each of next 3 dc, rep fr * ending with dc in last dc. Ch 3, turn.
Row 4: 2 dc in sp bet first dc and 5-dc group, *ch 3, sk 5-dc group, 2 dc in next sp, dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc in next sp, rep fr * ending with dc in each of last 2 dc. Ch 3, turn.
Row 5: Dc in next dc, *sk 2 dc, 5 dc in ch-3 sp, sk 2 dc, dc in each of next 3 dc, rep fr * ending with dc in last dc. Ch 3, turn.
Row 6-25: *Sk 2 dc, 5 dc in next dc, sk 2 dc, dc in each of next 3 dc, rep fr * ending with dc in each of last 2 dc. Ch 3, turn.
Row 26: Rep row 4.
Row 27: Rep row 5.
Row 28: Rep row 6.
Row 29: Dc in next dc, *sk 2 dc, 5 dc in next dc, sk 2 dc, dc3tog over next 3 dc, rep fr * ending with dc in last dc. Ch 3, turn.
Row 30: Sk 2 dc, *(dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in next dc, sk 5 dc, rep fr * ending with dc in last dc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 31: Sc in same dc, *ch 3, sc in next ch-1 sp, rep fr * ending with sc in last dc. Ch 1, then proceed to making sc seam along narrow side of piece with right sides facing tog. When you reach the bottom of the hat, don’t fasten off but continue with trim all around the circumference of the hat (still with right sides of hat facing tog) as follows:

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in front lp of first sc of row 2, *ch 6, sk 3 sc, sc in front lp of next sc, rep fr * all around. Sl st in first sc to join.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sl st next 3 ch, ch 1, sc in same ch, *picot, ch 6, sc in next ch-6 lp, rep fr * ending last rep with: picot, ch 3, dc in first sc.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, 2-tr bobble in same dc, picot, *ch 6, sc in next ch-6 lp, picot, ch 6, 4-tr bobble in next ch-6 lp, picot, rep fr * all around ending with sl st in top of first bobble to join. Fasten off.

Pull drawstring and knot into a bow to close the top section of the hat. Adjust the drawstring at the base of the hat to fit around the head.

You may also use satin ribbons instead of yarn for drawstrings.
